You do not need a subscription to listen to great audiobooks. Here are the legitimately free routes, ranked by how good they actually are.
1. Public-domain audiobook apps
Classics whose copyright expired are free forever, and several apps collect volunteer-read recordings. Quality varies by narrator, but the price is right and the catalogs are deep: Dickens, Austen, Sherlock Holmes, all free.
2. Library apps
If you have a library membership, apps that lend digital audiobooks give you premium titles free, with waiting lists like a real library. Underused and excellent.
3. YouTube
Enormous, chaotic, free. Great for sampling; bad for organized listening and offline use without Premium.
4. Language-first apps at launch
New apps building an audience often launch with generous free catalogs. This is the best-value window in audio: full content, no paywall, in exchange for being an early user. Bengali listeners should watch this space closely.
5. Free tiers of paid apps
Audible's free library, Kuku FM's free episodes, Storytel trials. Fine for sampling, frustrating as a permanent home.
